First, some stats…
- Facebook has more than 250 million users
- ~120 million of those users log onto Facebook at least once per day
- ~30 million users update their Facebook Status at least once per day
- ~30 million users currently access Facebook via their mobile device (I’m one of them)
Basically, everyone and their mother and their mother’s uncle (quite literally) is on Facebook! You know the other statistic is that approximately 5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook (worldwide) just about every day. Pretty wild isn’t it?! As cool as Facebook is as a social network and as much as it’s fun to tag and chat with our friends and comment on each other’s walls, what these stats do is they provide what appears to be an opportunity to marketers. An opportunity to interrupt you and market to you in a very annoying fashion… And on that note I introduce you to a hilarious video (a bit of a rant and plea) produced by my friend Scott Stratten (@unmarketing):
Turning Notifications Off:
My phone is my life-source (for business and pleasure). I’m part of the statistic that accesses their Facebook account via their mobile device on a daily basis (contributing also to the other statistic on the amount of time spent on the network). A few things that I get invitations too ALL THE TIME are “Event Invitations.” Most of these invitations have nothing to do with things that I’d be interested in but as I said, marketers see opportunity. Personally, I just see spam! One of the easiest and quickest ways to eliminate the noise and interruption that comes with such invitations is to edit your notification settings and thus the short video screen-cast provided below will show you how to do so (for those of you that don’t know how already)…
P.S. If you found this post helpful, you can join me on my Facebook Page here (don’t worry, I hate interruption marketing as much as you do).
