“Can” Doesn’t Mean You “Should”

If you want to spread the word about your endeavor, connect with fans and influencers, social media helps make that happen. It amplifies your message, quickly. But as much as it’s useful, it’s as if we’ve also found a great way to procrastinate. We stopped using it to be productive, and started using it just to chat.

You can Tweet all day.

You can check your email every 5 minutes.

You can take a nap in the middle of the afternoon instead of pushing through that project.

You can spend hours playing around with the new Facebook Timeline.

Yes, Google+ is fascinating between all of the Circling, sharing and posting.

Yes, this social media stuff is all part of marketing and promoting your work (but always in moderation).

You can stay connected all day, every day.

But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Or as Seth Godin would say, focus instead on doing the work that matters.
