Understanding what web hosting is

Think of your website as a store and the site visitors that come to that site as your customers. To open up your new store you’re going to need:

• A domain name
• A location to host that domain name (a web server)
• Staff (someone to manage & update your website — mostly likely you)
• Your product/services (this will be the content that your site visitors come to read/consume)

Choosing the right location (web host) to open your new business is a lot like choosing a location to open up your new brick and mortar office. You can choose to go with a shared server – the equivalent of a strip mall – but you’re sharing space and resources with hundreds of other sites. Some things that you do might affect them and vice versa.

Or, you can rent your own server. This is like leasing your own corner office building where nobody can tell you what you can and can’t do.

Some servers are dedicated to hosting just one site or a small number of sites belonging to a single person or organization. These are known as dedicated servers.

Then, you have servers that host multiple websites. This is called shared hosting.

All hosting is, is simply having a space online to house your website and serve it up to users who come searching for your content.

Unlimited is NOT unlimited

Many shared hosting providers offer “unlimited” hosting plans. They say things like “Unlimited space and bandwidth per month.” But remember the saying, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

These hosts operate on what’s known as an “average use” system. This means that for every site that has 50,000 or 100,000 visitors per month, there are dozens or hundreds of other sites that only have a couple of hundred site visitors.

Basically, while one site may be using up more than it’s fair share of space and bandwidth, there are dozens of other sites that are using very little or none at all.
